The NEBOSH qualification is one of the most respected safety qualifications in the UK, if you are debating whether this is the right step for your career then perhaps this case study might help.
Chris Ivey is Consultant Director of THSP’s Health and Safety team, gaining his NEBOSH qualifications was the catalyst that helped shape his health and safety career.
Where were you before you started your NEBOSH?
I left school in 1984 and went straight to work in a surveyors office, I worked here until 1996 when I was made redundant. I decided to take a break from work and spent the next six months in USA, however on my return I needed to find a job.
Without any qualifications or any trade behind me my options were limited and my bills were mounting so I took on a temping contract. This wasn’t really suited for me but I needed to make sure I could afford to pay my rent and it covered the bills.
Why did you choose to study NEBOSH?
Six months on, still temping and no nearer to finding a career. My manager suggested that I attended a Quality Assurance training course and it was during this that the tutor mentioned that health and safety law is a vital component of any management system. I knew nothing about health and safety though and so asked my manager what I could do to correct this. He recommended the NEBOSH certificate.
I’ve often said that health and safety is something I fell into by accident, but the truth is that it changed my life. From day one, the course grabbed my interest and it all made sense to me.
How has NEBOSH helped you in your career?
Soon after completing the course the company underwent a re-organisation and I found that I needed to find a new job. I contacted two companies and was offered a job by both!
In November 1998, I started as a Health and Safety Consultant at THSP and in December 2014 I was offered a place on the Board of Directors.
Since embarking on my initial NEBOSH course I have added to this with the NEBOSH Construction and Environmental Certificates.
Would you recommend NEBOSH qualifications?
I can honestly say that without a NEBOSH qualification I wouldn’t be where I am now, getting NEBOSH qualified was the push I needed to start my long and successful health and safety career.
For anyone looking at starting their own health and safety journey THSP offers a full range of NEBOSH courses, these include the NEBOSH National General Certificate, NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety and the NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety.
