Family owned business Goss Springs are based in Epping where a broad range of springs, wire forms and metal pressings are designed, developed and manufactured under the names of Goss Springs and PMT – Press and Multislide Tooling. The company are no newcomers to the industry having celebrated their 60th anniversary just a couple of years ago.

What makes Goss Springs so different?

Nick and Dan Goss are sure that whilst there are many areas where their years of expertise count it is their close relationship with customer from the early design stages of the product though to their prototyping, stringent quality control process which lead them to be able to manufacture high quality, reliable and durable components. The company is rightly proud of the design and manufacturing standards under which the business operates, ISO 9001:2000, TS16949 Automotive and AS9100 Aerospace. Customers can also obtain, on request F.A.I.R. (First Article Inspection Report), PPAP and ISIR certification.

Expertise in a wide range of industries

Springs and pressings are used in almost every conceivable industry and application and whilst Goss and PMT are experts in providing solutions for Automotive, Aerospace, Defence, Medical and the Electronics industries, their unique capabilities are widely used also in Security, Sports and Leisure, Hobbies and Toys and Motorsport.

Depth of manufacturing capability

Manufacturing in excess of 600 million components annually does not mean that Goss and PMT concentrate on high volume production. Yes they are able to maintain a high degree of competitivity through large economies of scales but the extensive manufacturing capability and diversity and number of machines deployed means that they are able to produce much lower volumes, even one offs at the other end of the scale in requirements for say Motor Sport or Hobbies and Toys.

CNCs manufacture wire forms and springs up to 8mm whilst hand form and prototype springs and forms up to 10mm can be made. Multi-stage Progression Tools operate up to a 250 tonne capacity and multi-slide press work up to 35 tonnes.

Inspection checks are carried out at every stage of the process from goods inward to despatch. Only the latest measuring equipment is used from basic hand held equipment to highly accurate video measuring machines.

Process control systems monitor and even adjust production to ensure that that accuracy to specification is ensured and that parts are more than just within limits. Batch testing is carried out as standard but, where required, inspection of each part can be carried out under controlled conditions.

Many of the instruments used are calibrated in-house and some of the more specialised equipment is manufactured by Goss themselves.

Optimism and confidence for the future – share with Goss

Nick and Dan Goss are optimistic about the future of UK manufacturing and that the company’s attention to product quality, fast turnaround, geographical location competitive pricing and their willingness to engage in the design process with the customer will allow them to continue to develop the business. More than just a spring to Goss, it is their passion and way of life.
