Building Bridges Between Laboratories and Industry

Birmingham, September 2026: This year, Lab Innovations, the UK’s largest laboratory industry trade show, will once again be co-located with Advanced Engineering, the UK’s leading annual gathering of engineering and manufacturing professionals. For the first time, the two events will also be joined by UK Metals Expo, bringing the metals supply chain into the mix and creating an even broader meeting point for science, engineering and manufacturing. Taking place at the NEC, Birmingham, on November 4 and 5, 2026, the joint events will create a unique cross-sector platform designed to drive innovation and foster collaboration across disciplines. Visitors from all three worlds can register to attend now.

As the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy enters its second year, the country’s ability to convert scientific discovery into industrial value remains a priority. The UK Innovation Report 2026 found that, while Britain remains a global leader in scientific output, this strength has not transcended into sustained industrial competitiveness. It is clear that closing this gap depends on cross-sector collaboration across life sciences, which provides a route for the country’s technical workforce to meet the challenges that face the lab and engineering industries. Last year’s co-location at the NEC show saw more than 600 exhibitors combine for the largest event yet.

The partnership proved fruitful in opening new opportunities for visitors and exhibitors alike, with companies like SciMed opting to showcase at both events. The laboratory equipment distributor made use of both exhibitions to demonstrate innovative and world-class products across the lab and engineering industries. Similarly, equipment distributor Scientific Laboratory Supplies unveiled its new stand, which brought some of the leading scientific brands, such as Azenta and Eppendorf, in one place.

Building Bridges Between Laboratories and Industry

This collaboration illustrates the increasing number of sectors relevant to multiple industries, like chemical process engineering, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, which require solutions rooted in advanced materials, precision instrumentation and rigorous testing environments. Engineers developing next-generation manufacturing processes rely on lab-grade data to validate and optimise their designs, while laboratory professionals benefit from the efficiency of automation, robotics and digitalisation.

By hosting all three communities under one roof, Lab Innovations and Advanced Engineering, along with UK Metals Expo, create a natural meeting point for exchanging expertise and products that address shared challenges. Lab Innovations will host influential speakers covering important themes such as biotech innovation, sustainability, compliance and data quality that attendees can apply to their own sectors. Similarly, Advanced Engineering will bring together expert speakers across six forums spanning advanced manufacturing, materials, composites, electronics and aerospace.

“Collaboration between engineering and laboratory science has never been more important,” says Adam Gough, portfolio director at Lab Innovations. “By co-locating with Advanced Engineering and UK Metals Expo, we provide a platform where different industries can come together, exchange ideas and accelerate progress in areas that demand both scientific precision and engineering efficiency.”

“Laboratory operators can learn a lot from our sister shows. Highly sophisticated facilities are already implementing state-of-the-art analytical equipment as well as robotics and automation technologies. The cross-pollination brings ideas to scaling up laboratories and bridging research to commercial production.”
